This Week in the World Affairs Brief
TRUMP’S LATEST ULTIMATUM TO PUTIN
President Trump has appropriately realized the 50-day deadline he gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a peace deal with Ukraine was far too long and has now made it less than two weeks. Because Russia has been under various forms of sanctions for years, it is relatively immune to Trump’s favorite negotiating tool, so he is hoping to add teeth to his ultimatum by threatening to impose a massive 100% (or higher) secondary tariff on Russia’s oil partners who buy oil and turn it around for sale to the West. The trading partners are generally composed of the BRICS nations who are socialist and communist nations trying to dethrone the dollar as the world’s reserve currency, and challenge US hegemony in the world. They include Russia, China and India. Trump’s intent is to blunt Putin’s revenue stream that is financing the Ukraine war, but all other products that India produces for export to the US will be subject to this higher tariff tax that will be paid for by Americans. While it is true that massive tariff increases do limit the export potential of the affected countries, using tariffs as a foreign policy weapon hurts a lot of innocent people. Although it will put a few screws on Putin, it won’t nearly be enough to blunt his appetite for taking back Ukraine in the least. Trump’s tariffs also won’t change China’s thirst for world power. Below, we have collected news stories on more cases of permit holders stopping mass public shootings with their handguns (we separately collect cases where concealed handguns are used to stop other crimes). There is no reason to believe this list is comprehensive, given how little media coverage is devoted to these heroic acts. In addition, we do not attempt here to list the vast number of defensive gun uses in general that are reported daily in the US.
...the New York Times, Associated Press, Fox News (website), Washington Post, NPR, NBC News, BBC, and others ignored the gun used to stop the attack. The Marine with the gun appears to be black.
